Genetics of Populations Laboratory

Head Ilya K. Zakharov, Dr.Biol.Sci., Professor

The Genetics of Populations Laboratory of The Institute of Cytology and Genetics was founded in 1963 by R.L. Berg.

The Main Fields of Research

Genetic monitoring of natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster. Study of genetic diversity of natural and experimental populations. Study of global and local dinamycs of natural populations gene pools.

The mutation process dynamics. Spontaneous, insertional and induced mutagenesis in Drosophila melanogaster.

Studies on the effects of genetic and epigenetic factors on the mutability and gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster.

Transposable elements (TE) in populations and in experiments. Population and genetic analysis of unstable alleles series, high-mutable choromosomes and mutator genes in Drosophila melanogaster. The effect of selection and stress on the TE transposition rates.

Endosymbiont Wolbachia distribution in Drosophila natural populations. Symbiogenetics of the «Wolbachia - Drosophila melanogaster» system.

Biodiversity: the distribution and population genetics of synanthropic and wild species of Palearctic Drosophilidae (Diptera) family.

The Fly is small, but Great!
By Andrei Ivannikov, 12 years old

The laboratory put in practice the test genetic systems for the estimation of mutagenic and radioprotective properties of various chemical and physical factors on Drosophila as model object.

The Fly Stock Collection of the laboratory is the largest in the Russian Federation. It includes mutant stocks and stocks collected from natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster and other species of genus Drosophila.

The Scientific School

The laboratory keeps the traditions of research, established by the founders of population and evolutionary Genetics in Russia - Sergey Chetverikov, Nikolay Dubinin, Dmitriy Romashov, G. Tinyakov, Raisa Berg.
